BACTERIAL ASSOCIATED WITH SWIMMING POOL WATER IN BENIN CITY, NIGERIA

Swimming pools are man-made recreational water bodies. These bodies supposed to be hygienic but due human activities, they have been considered as sources of infections. The objective this study was ascertain the bacterial isolates found in some swimming Benin City. Five City identified A, B, C, D and E were studied. A total 15 samples (three from each pool) collected duplicates before after maximum bather’s load, change. Samples analysed bacteriologically using standard methods. 51 organisms isolated with Staphylococcus epidermidis having a prevalence 27.5 %/, Escherichia coli; 15.7 %, aureus; Enterobacter aerugenes; 13.7 Klebsiella aerogenes; Pseudomonas aeruginosa; 5.9 pneumonia; 3.2% Streptococcus faecalis; 3.2%. mean viable colony counts 1.60x 102 /ml, 7.33 x 9.00 1.60 /ml 7.30 at 37 oC obtained respectively. It observed that C contaminated exceeding recommended 200 counts/ml detection coli 100 ml. high load isolation pathogenic bacteria demonstrate need for pool health authorities improve surveillance, decontamination standards, educate swimmers on hygiene entering pools. This emphasis proper maintenance bacteriological drawn up Nigeria.
